A new health facility has opened in Michael Jordan’s hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, and PEOPLE has an exclusive photo of the basketball legend attending the groundbreaking ceremony.
The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic, located on Greenfield St. in Wilmington, was opened by 61-year-old Jordan and Novant Health. The purpose of the clinic is to provide “much-needed comprehensive primary care services,” as stated in a news release.
The former NBA player has a soft spot for “individuals who are uninsured or underinsured,” and the clinic will provide medical services to those in need.
“Everyone is worthy of access to quality health care, no matter where you live or if you have insurance,” Jordan stated in a press release, stating that he is “truly inspired by the many powerful stories of people who are now thriving thanks to the support of our Charlotte medical clinics.”
“I am confident Novant Health’s new clinic will positively impact individuals and families throughout Wilmington,” Jordan declared, adding that he is “profoundly grateful to help make this day happen for my hometown.” Jordan’s $10 million donation to Novant Health paved the way for the construction of two more Jordan Family Medicals Clinics in Charlotte. At the clinic’s grand launch, the former NBA player was spotted in an exclusive shot by PEOPLE chatting with Dr. Michael Hoben in the foyer.
Jordan presently resides in North Carolina, and the statement states that many of the patients who visit his clinics have “never had a primary care provider before” and have “praised the clinic teams for helping restore health and a sense of hope” to families in the state.
“Each Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic has been thoughtfully planned for the best location within the community,” stated Ernie Bovio, president of Novant Health Coastal Region and Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The third Michael Jordan clinic is already fulfilling our mission to revolutionize healthcare for all patients by fostering a culture of lifelong wellness, all because of the dedication of our care staff.A primary care team and a community health worker will be available to help patients connect with community resources, and the clinic has 12 patient rooms, according to Novant Health’s statement.
You can see Jordan addressing the crowd during Tuesday’s clinic launch in another photo. When asked about Michael Jordan’s financial support of Novant Health’s initiatives to close health equity disparities, senior vice president Ann Caulkins expressed profound gratitude. With over 9,000 patient visits in 2017, the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medicine Clinics in Charlotte are making a significant impact on the community. The clinic team in Wilmington will provide life-changing care, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to expand our model there.
Although Jordan spent his early years in Wilmington, North Carolina, his family moved from Brooklyn, New York, where he was born. The NBA star has always placed a premium on showing his support for the North Carolina Hornets, his hometown team. He owns an interest in the franchise.
As of August 2023, having sold his investment to a group of investors headed by Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin, Jordan shifted from being the primary stakeholder to having a small ownership role.At the moment, Jordan sent a touching message to Hornets supporters in which he called the chance to buy an NBA team in his home state “a dream come true.”The Hornets moniker was returned to “its rightful home in Charlotte” in 2013, and Jordan noted in his open letter to Charlotte that he will “never forget the excitement” in the city. The Bobcats took over for the Hornets when they left Charlotte in 2002. The squad restored the Hornets moniker in 2013, according to SI, thanks to Jordan’s leadership.
Returning to Charlotte with the Hornets was a “uniting” event for the city’s Bobcats and Hornets fanbases, according to Jordan. “Our fans told us how important this was, and the amazing level of support and enthusiasm proved their point,” said the author.
