On Thursday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the top-seeded Boston Celtics 118-94. Donovan Mitchell scored 29 points, Evan Mobley added 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the game tied their second-round playoff series at one game apiece.
Mitchell scored 33 points with little assistance in a 25-point loss two nights ago, but the Cavaliers responded with a third-quarter surge and a resounding victory. In the third quarter, Mitchell scored sixteen points. He began the fourth quarter by making three consecutive baskets, one of which was a banked three-pointer from 28 feet out that caused Mitchell to shrug his shoulders and revert to defense.
The Celtics were led by 25 points from Jayson Tatum and 19 more from Jaylen Brown. Game 1 hero Derrick White, who scored 25 points to lead the Celtics to a 120-95 victory, shot just 10-for-8 from beyond the arc.On Saturday and Monday, the series will head to Cleveland for Games 3 and 4, and on Wednesday, it will make its way back to Boston for Game 5.
Midway in the fourth quarter, Caris LeVert, who came off the bench for Cleveland, made a pull-up jumper for 21 points. This put the Cavaliers up by 20 points and sent spectators running for the exits. Several of the remaining spectators started booing.
Just one minute later, after the Celtics had missed yet another 3-pointer (bringing their total from long range to 8 for 35), LeVert scored a layup and Tatum was called for a blatant foul. Boston coach Joe Mazzulla used all of his bench players in a game that was already up 25 points.Following that, J.B. Bickerstaff of Cleveland came in to relieve Mitchell, who played a game-high 37 minutes on Tuesday but didn’t come off the bench during the 10-2 Celtics run that opened the game in the fourth quarter.
With Mitchell making four of five three-pointers in the third quarter, Cleveland was able to increase their advantage to fourteen points.
With a strained calf muscle, Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis has missed three consecutive games. With Jarrett Allen out for five games with rib bruises, Mobley got the start at center and scored more points than he had in any playoff game before.
In the first quarter, Mobley scored eleven points while the Cavaliers fell nine points behind, setting the stage for what seemed like a second consecutive drubbing. However, LeVert scored eight of Cleveland’s eleven points in a row. Before the Cavs tied it up at halftime, Boston took an eight-point lead in the second quarter.
Halfway through the first half, Tatum had 16 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists, while Mobley had 15 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists.
