Notable Liverpool Player Virgil van Dijk Enjoys His Time Off by Playing Tennis at Wimbledon

Though a lot of his Premier League teammates have returned to training, Virgil van Dijk is taking it easy for the time being.

Last season came to a close for the center defender, who was instrumental in Liverpool’s Champions League victory and who also played a role in Holland’s Nations League finish as runners-up to Portugal.

As the 28-year-old took in the action on Centre Court, Van Dijk—generally regarded as one of the world’s top football players—attended Wimbledon for the first time.

After Liverpool’s Champions League final victory over Tottenham, Wimbledon’s official Twitter account interviewed Van Dijk and asked if he had calmed down.

He smiled and added, “It’s been a while, so I had a nice little break and I’m happy to be here.”

The Dutchman expressed his excitement about the upcoming Wimbledon matches, saying, “I’ve seen some games on TV in the last couple of days and to be here now I think it’s something special. I’m looking forward to the games today and it’s going to be a good day.”

When asked about the difference between footballers and tennis players, Van Dijk said that the former must rely on themselves while the latter can rely on their teammates for help.

Occasionally, my teammates lend me a hand, but tennis players are essentially on their own, he remarked. They’ve got a fantastic coach rooting for them from the sidelines, but ultimately, the spotlight is on them.

Van Dijk is expected to make a speedy recovery to Melwood before Thursday night’s preseason match against Tranmere Rovers, which kicks off Liverpool’s schedule.
