New York Knicks’d: Bereaved supporters react to team’s elimination from NBA playoffs

After beginning the day with fingers crossed, New York Knicks supporters ended up shrugging their shoulders and thumbs down.

The local Knickerbockers’ disappointing loss to the Indiana Pacers 130–109 in Sunday’s Game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs at Madison Square Garden was the seventh game of the series. The Knicks’ electrifying postseason journey came to an end with the setback; they had hoped to go deeper into the playoffs than last year.

By Sunday night, though, those dreams had long since faded as spectators began to leave MSG even before the final whistle blew.

John Papa left New Jersey on Sunday and made the journey to Manhattan to attend the game in person. On his way out of the arena, he expressed his anguish.

The atmosphere was electric, he remarked. Unfortunately, they were beaten right away. Right from the start, we were trounced.

On Sunday, Knicks fans flocked to Manhattan bars like Blarney Stone on 8th Avenue, which is immediately outside MSG, to watch the game. Some even spilled out into the street.

The Knicks, who haven’t won a title since 1973, were celebrating OG Anunoby’s return to the lineup after he missed four games due to a strained left hamstring. After missing Game 6 due to an abdominal strain, Josh Hart was likewise able to return to the lineup. The Pacers, though, got out to a fast start on Sunday, scoring 39 points and building a 12-point lead at the end of the opening quarter. Despite this, the team was unable to overcome them.

A man shouting, “Is there a priest or a rabbi?” was overheard in the bar. Is a prayer possible?

As he left the Garden, Knicks fan Bobby Diaz was visibly upset.

He called it “B.S.” because he had spent $700 on a ticket and was disappointed with the service. Hundreds of bucks!

Outside of Madison Square Garden, fans were expressing their frustration with the Boston Celtics, the team that the Pacers will face in Tuesday’s conference finals. Several shouted “F— the Celtics” as a group.

From her home in Queens, Chantay Sawell made her way to Madison Square Garden. She expressed optimism about the team’s future.

“The Knicks were so bad that I stopped watching them seven years ago,” she stated. “They returned. They started over again. I was overjoyed. Initially began attending games. Even though it’s painful, you know what? That was an amazing year. They have every right to be proud, and I wish them nothing but further success.
