Billy Donovan, Head Coach of the Bulls, Completes Important Offseason Objective
Billy Donovan is rearranging his coaching team as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. This offseason marks the beginning of a team reconfiguration following yet another season of postseason elimination.
With Chris Fleming gone, Josh Longstaff off to the Charlotte Hornets, and John Bryant demoted to the bench, Donovan looked for someone with head coaching experience to fill the top bench position left by Maurice Cheeks’ voluntary decline in playing time.
A man has been located for Donovan.”According to sources close to the situation, Wes Unseld Jr. has agreed to become Billy Donovan’s primary assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls,” Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN broke the news on May 18 on X. Previously, Unseld Jr. coached the Denver Nuggets for six years under Michael Malone. He then spent almost two years as head coach of the Wizards.
While coaching the Wizards, Unseld compiled a record of 77-130 in more than two years. In January, he was transferred from his previous position to one in the front desk.
Shortly thereafter, K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago verified the report, exposing the network’s prior fascination with Unseld.
Bulls PR has confirmed the impending hire. Johnson wrote on X that last week it was reported that Donovan was looking for a head coach with experience as a lead assistant. Before Billy Donovan became available, Unseld Jr. was being considered to succeed Jim Boylen in 2020.
Additionally, Unseld is acquainted with Artuaras Karnisovas, the executive vice president of basketball operations.
