It is understood by Telegraph Sport that Chelsea moved quickly up the list of potential successors to Pochettino following the public confirmation of his departure on Tuesday night based on mutual consent.
Chelsea is interested in Kieran McKenna, Enzo Maresca, Sebastian Hoeness, Thomas Frank, and Michel. The team has already taken steps to investigate more than one of those prospects.
Chelsea spoke with several people to determine the best course of action during late-night meetings and conversations on Tuesday, Wednesday, and into Wednesday evening.
Chelsea’s quick start suggests they aim to find Pochettino’s replacement quickly and do not want to take five or six weeks, as was the case when the club appointed the Argentine. However, no specific timeline has been placed on the appointment process.
Before selecting Pochettino, Chelsea interviewed at least five applicants to create a final three-man shortlist; but, this time around, the process should go more smoothly.
Chelsea knows that if they wait too long, Manchester United may challenge them for some of their targets.
Erik ten Hag’s future at United will not be decided until after the team’s game at Wembley on Saturday in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
If Ten Hag is fired, then at least two of the managers named as contenders for the Chelsea position are reportedly of interest to United: McKenna, who is set to accept a new deal from Ipswich Town, and Frank of Brentford.
Brighton is also reportedly interested in McKenna, and international rivals are rumored to be pursuing Leicester City manager Maresca. According to sources from Italy, Maresca’s Leicester contract contains an £8.5 million release clause.
Hoeness recently inked a new deal at Stuttgart that will keep him there until June 2027, but sources in Germany have cautioned Chelsea that it may be difficult to get him on board.
“You can definitely assume that I will also be the coach of VfB Stuttgart next year,” stated Hoeness in a recent statement. I most definitely wouldn’t have extended my contract if I had considered moving. I’m here because I firmly believe that this is a place where we can grow together. Nothing, in my opinion, has changed.
