After the Argentine icon’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain in June of last year, Beckham played a role in luring him to America. Beckham, who was formerly an attacker for Manchester United, says it is “surreal” to have the ex-Barcelona star on the squad despite the star’s phenomenal success in Major League Soccer.
On the Smartless podcast, Beckham was asked about being Messi’s boss and said, “I can’t look at it like that, I can’t!” “I simply cannot.”
“Bring Messi to Miami felt unbelievable,” he continued. Furthermore, I am still in disbelief. When people point out that my team features Messi, I always feel a twinge of surrealism: here we have arguably the best player in soccer history, the most accomplished player in soccer history, and he’s playing in the Major League Soccer in Miami.
For Inter Miami, Messi has been fantastic this year. The Herons have topped the Eastern Conference thanks in large part to the 36-year-old’s ten goals and nine assists in Major League Soccer. In the CONCACAF Champions Cup, he scored twice and set up another, but his team was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
When Tata Martino’s Inter Miami team travels to Canada to play the Vancouver Whitecaps in their next Major League Soccer match this weekend, Beckham and the other directors of the club will be rooting for another Messi-led triumph.
