Even though Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) has produced athletes who have gone on to play in the NBA, NFL, MLB, and the Olympics, the school has never before retired an athlete’s jersey.

Santa Margarita High School officially retired Klay Thompson’s No. 1 jersey on Friday during a school-wide assembly. Thompson was a member of the 2015 Golden State Warriors championship squad and a two-time NBA All-Star.

School authorities have announced that Thompson has become the first Santa Margarita athlete to have his jersey formally retired. He succeeds Carson Palmer (NFL), Amy Rodriguez (gold medal-winning soccer player), and Brian Finneran (NFL), among others, who were all former Eagles.

Thompson guided Santa Margarita to a 30-5 record and the 2008 Division III state championship while playing for the Warriors, who drafted him eleventh overall in the 2011 NBA draft. In that season, he averaged 18 points per game. However, in the state championship game, he scored 39 points, which included a record-setting seven 3-pointers.
