Stuttgart and Germany defender Waldemar Anton is being considered by Liverpool as a potential transfer target

The 27-year-old Anton had a great fourth season with Stuttgart last year, and he was a major reason why Sebastian Hoeness’ squad finished second in the Bundesliga. Only Bayer Leverkusen had a better defensive record.

After an outstanding season in which the central defender missed just one game in Germany’s top division, Julian Nagelsmann named Anton to his 26-man team for Euro 2024.

The tournament hosts play Scotland on Friday night, so he’ll be looking to make a mark. However, he’ll have plenty of opponents to choose from, including Nico Schlotterbeck, Jonathan Tah, and Antonio Rudiger.

Sport Bild of Germany reports that after asking about Anton’s availability two weeks ago, Liverpool will likely be closely monitoring his performances.

Michael Edwards, the club’s returning chief executive officer of football, and newly appointed Liverpool manager Arne Slot are looking to shore up the defense, and Anton is being considered as a possible successor to Joel Matip, who left the club last summer when his contract expired.

According to the article, Liverpool’s ties to Stuttgart, which stem from the deal the two clubs struck for Wataru Endo last year, could provide them an advantage.

Anton has a release clause in his contract at Stuttgart that makes him available for €22.5 million (£19 million), and rumours have it that Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are interested as well. Before signing with Stuttgart in 2020, Anton climbed the ladder at his hometown club Hannover’s academy and played in more than 130 games.

After Endo, a midfielder Anton had praised for Stuttgart, moved to Merseyside in August of last year, Anton went on to call Liverpool “one of the greatest clubs in the world.”

Everyone would have liked it if Wataru remained; he’s fantastic in every way, from his personality to his athleticism, Anton remarked at the time.

But he’s nоt leаving; he’s jоining Liverpооl, widely cоnsidered tо be the greаtest club in the wоrld. We hоpe he hаs the greаtest оf luck becаuse we knоw he wаnted tо mаke the mоst оf this chаnce.
