Sporting Lisbon reportedly turned down Chelsea’s £73 million bid for striker ‘Zlatan Ibrahimovic 2.0’

With just 35 goals scored in 21 league games this season, Mauricio Pochettino’s side ranks third-worst in the Premier League’s upper half.

Despite spending more than £1 billiоn in the previous three transfer windows under Todd Boehly, rumors have circulated that they could add a striker to their roster this month. Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen are two names that have surfaced as possible targets.

According to Portuguese news agency Record, they have reportedly shifted their focus to Gyokeres, but Sporting rejected an offer of €85 million (£73 million).

The release clause for Gyokeres is €100 million (£86 million), and Chelsea’s offer is significantly lower than this amount, according to the report.

Also, the Blues’ hopes of acquiring Gyokeres—whom they signed just a year ago—are likely to be dashed because the player is determined to remain with Sporting until the summer.

After a breakout season for Gyokeres at Championship club Coventry, the transfer to Sporting took place in July.

The Sky Blues advanced to the play-off final thanks to his 21 league goals, but they were defeated by Luton on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time at Wembley.

His superb play for Sporting so far this season is reminiscent of his form during his time in England.

The 25-year-old has scored 20 goals in all competitions this 2023–24 season, with 11 goals and seven assists in 16 appearances in the top division.

With Gyokeres’s desire to stay at Sporting and the rejection of their initial approach, Chelsea may have to seek out other options to improve their goal-scoring if they wish to have a great season finale following a shaky start.

Signing season With Nicolas Jackson absent at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal and Christopher Nkunku limiting himself to only one league start owing to many ιnjury setbacks, Chelsea are left without a convincing striker.
