This was something that Kristaps Porzingis was not going to miss.
He was listed as questionable over the weekend, and Joe Mazzulla, the head coach, said he was only “expecting to see him tonight.”
His right soleus strain kept him out of most of the Eastern Conference playoffs, and his left ankle’s torn medial retinaculum kept him out of Games 3 and 4 of the Finals. But Porzingis—who declared he would sacrifice his life for this team—played in Game 5 with the opportunity to help seal the championship in front of the TD Garden crowd.
“I knew they had been so close, so I came in with the mentality that I would give this team and this city everything to try and win a championship,” from Day 1. It was a devastating moment for me when I was hurt. I was unwilling to even acknowledge the reality. I thought, “There’s no way that happened, right?” But it was on this particular night that I decided to give everything I had.

“What was revealed was the reality: my tendon was only misaligned after something had been ripped. Every step hurts, for the most part. My leg would swell up when I would go for walks in Dallas. Regarding injuries, Porzingis stated, “I was like, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to play if I’m going to play.'”
“I decided to try and figure out a way to handle this,” was my frame of mind. I’m feeling it for this game, somehow. A large portion of it was simply the rush of performing in front of our supporters in the Garden and having the chance to end it. And I really got it going on.”
