Since departing the Golden State Warriors in 2019, Kevin Durant has gone through a difficult patch, following a couple of years of winning NBA championships with them.
Before being moved to the Phoenix Suns in the middle of last season, he had a disappointing stint with the Brooklyn Nets, who were touted as a superteam and undeniable superpower. Since then, he has experienced two more early exits from the playoffs.
He was spotted at the gym with CJ McCollum, a sharpshooter for the New Orleans Pelicans, as the NBA offseason began, according to NBACentral.Last season, Durant averaged 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 52.3 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from 3-point range. He is still playing at a very high level, even though he is 35 years old.
Many predicted the Suns would be title contenders in 2023–24 thanks to their great star trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
But a 49-33 regular-season record and a first-round playoff sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves were the unfortunate outcomes of injuries and bad roster construction surrounding them.
The outcome was the dismissal of Frank Vogel after only one season as head coach and the hire of Mike Budenholzer, who went on to win the championship in 2021 while coaching the Milwaukee Bucks.
A big trade might be in the cards for the Suns this offseason if they decide they need depth, a real point guard, and a floor general.
Even though they made it all the way to the NBA Finals in 2021—losing to Budenholzer’s Bucks—the Suns still haven’t won the Larry O’Brien Trophy in their fifty-plus years in the league.
