Jesse Marsch responds to incredible moments from Argentina’s GOAT, Lionel Messi, and how he destroyed Canada’s Copa America strategy. “He’s so good.”
Canada always knew they would have a difficult task when they played the reigning winners in the first tournament on American soil. When heading RB Leipzig into Champions League play against Paris Saint-Germain, Marsch faced Messi previously and believed he had a strategy to contain the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
But Messi has built a career out of finding gaps in opposing defenses, and he did so once more as Argentina won handily at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. He was involved in both of the Albiceleste’s goals, as Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez found the goal. After losing the ability to contain Argentina’s all-time great, Marsch remarked, “We talked a lot about our compactness and then identifying the spaces that Messi likes to show up.” We discussed avoiding diving in for tackles because it’s difficult to win them from him. If you do so, however, or if you start diving in for tackles, he becomes very skilled at slipping, moving, getting back up, and creating small plays.
I feel this way about Messi. Having coached against him on multiple occasions, I believe we executed many excellent plays and had a solid game plan. He’s still making plays because he’s that good. I believe the two balls he makes on the two goals are of the highest caliber. Terrible, it’s amazing. It’s incredible.
