Things are about to become interesting for Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign.

How fast people’s views can shift, isn’t that incredible? Germany, heavy favorites to win Euro 2024, began their final group match at 9 o’clock local time on Sunday. Halftime must have been a time when many fans were wondering if the hosts may lose it all in the final 16. By eleven o’clock in the evening, the cheerful atmosphere had returned. Restoring faith was a breeze.

Following Germany’s thrashing of Scotland, they won a more difficult but deserved match against Hungary. And now, in extra time, they tied Switzerland 1-1, rescuing the hosts from a second-place finish in Group A.

It seemed like a matchup with Italy in the round of 16 during the first 65 minutes of the match and the 15 minutes at halftime. Even though Germany’s optimism was dwindling in Frankfurt, the reigning champions still haven’t found out where they’ll play in Group B. However, Niclas Fullkrug was able to retrieve it in the end.

But where does one even begin? It was not as if 36-year-old Julian Nagelsmann had rested key players for this match; the same starting eleven who ruthlessly dispatched Scotland and displayed maturity and professionalism in defeating Hungary were all on display. The assumption was that those players would not only prevail over Switzerland, but that playing together once more would provide valuable consistency and momentum leading up to the knockout stages. It was more complicated than that, and not just because the center is out of the next round due to Jonathan Tah’s booking. However, Germany got off to a good start. Jamal Musiala, a 21-year-old displaying more signs of his extraordinary ability, performed an absurd spin, burst, and pass while cornered against the sideline in his own half. The front line was also incredibly fluid, with wingers Musiala and Florian Wirtz essentially filling in for Ilkay Gundogan as auxiliary No. 10s because to their free-flowing play. They would slide inside while Max Mittelstadt and Joshua Kimmich pushed up from full-back; the chemistry between them was quick and instinctual.

Even when they didn’t have the ball, the Germans were determined to press. In contrast to England’s seemingly paralyzed state of mind when faced with Denmark, Germany seemed to be unthinking in the most advantageous way.

Robert Andrich appeared to give them the lead with a long-range drive that sailed into the bottom corner, bouncing off the helpless Yann Sommer at the near post. After Musiala’s foul in the buildup saw the strike disallowed, Switzerland had their chance to score.
