As the second half got underway, Diaz found himself with an opportunity to open his Copa America goal account. Rodriguez’s next set-piece attempt was cleared as far as Diaz, who was standing atop the penalty box, but the Liverpool winger missed the Paraguay net with his volley attempt by a few feet.

In the 69th minute, Paraguay cut the lead in half, creating intense tension in the largely Colombian Houston audience. The next open-ended play gave Diaz two excellent chances to contribute to the goal. With 25 minutes left, Diaz drove at the Paraguayan defenders in transition, giving Rodriguez a well-timed layoff on an overlapping run. Just outside the six-yard box, the attacking midfielder was unmarked, but he chose to square the ball and waste the chance.

A minute later, Diaz seemed to put the game away for good after a masterful shot fake set him up for an identical distance shot that found its goal. But the teenage winger never really got his balance and struck hard into the side net.
