Following their trip to the Western Conference finals, the Timberwolves sign Finch to a four-year contract extension

Following their finest season in twenty years, the Minnesota Timberwolves signed head coach Chris Finch to a four-year contract extension on Monday.

Before the Timberwolves advanced to the Western Conference finals and fell to Dallas in five games, Finch led them to their second-best-ever regular-season record of 56-26. The only other occasion in the thirty-five years since the Wolves’ entry into the NBA that they made it past the first round of the playoffs was in 2004.

All-time leader in the Timberwolves standings is Finch (160–127), who has a winning percentage of.557 over 3 1/2 seasons. With a.521 winning percentage over 11 seasons, the late Flip Saunders (427-392), who guided the 2004 club to the Western Conference finals, is remembered. There are just two Wolves coaches with more than 100 victories: Saunders and Finch. In a statement released by the team, Finch stated, “I’m proud of how we’ve been able to establish a great culture here with the Timberwolves, and I look forward to continuing to lead this organization and make our fans proud.”

With 37 victories over Western Conference opponents, the Wolves led the league and boasted the strongest defense in the NBA with a defensive rating of 108.4. Also chosen to coach the Western Conference squad in the All-Star game was Finch and his coaching staff.

In the announcement, President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly noted, “Chris is a wonderful coach, and an even better person.” “We are overjoyed that he is receiving a merit-based extension as compensation. Every year the team has been better under his leadership. He’s the ideal leader for our company.”On February 21, 2021, Gersson Rosas, Connelly’s predecessor, hired Finch to take Ryan Saunders’ place after he was sacked. On April 11, 2022, he was already granted an extension. Before receiving his major break in Minnesota, 54-year-old Finch worked as an assistant for Toronto, Houston, Denver, and New Orleans.

The British Basketball League’s Sheffield Sharks were coached by the two-time NCAA Division III All-American from Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania, who had previously been a player for the squad from 1997 to 2003. In the 2012 Olympics, Finch was also the coach of the British national team.
