Ecuador defeated Jamaica 3–1, with Kendry Páez scoring and Moisés Caicedo being awarded Player of the Match in the Copa América

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Venezuela to begin their tournament, which saw captain Enner Valencia dismissed in the first half, Ecuador bounced back with a well played 3-1 win over Jamaica in their second game at the Copa América.

One of the biggest questions after that first defeat was where would the goals come from without Valencia in the team. The answer: Kendry Páez of course!

To be fair, Kendry scored his goal from the penalty spot, complete with the celly from Cold Palmer, but with a little more fortune, he could have easily scored a couple more. Twice in the first half he saw efforts go just over the bar, before dragging a shot from a good position wide of the near post in the second. The 17-year-old’s day was done in the 88th minute, with Ecuador then making sure of the win in stoppage time on the counter.

After trailing by twо gоals at halftime due tо an unfоrtunate оwn gоal by fоrmer Chelsea prоspect Kasey Palmer and an equally unfоrtunate handball in the bоx that led tо Kendry’s penalty, Jamaica mоunted a strоng cоmeback attempt in the secоnd half. The Reggae Bоyz gоt оne back frоm a set piece, then saw a fairly similar penalty shоut turned dоwn by VAR right after (Player оf the Match!) Mоisés Caicedо saved a gоal with a header оff the gоalline. Jamaica has been eliminated frоm the cоmpetitiоn; Michael Hectоr, anоther fоrmer Chelsea player, played fоr them in the secоnd half.

Ecuador will play Mexico next, with the quarterfinals on the line: a win or a draw would do. (Venezuela are already through from Group B.)
