On Wednesday night, Brad Stevens, the president of basketball operations for the Boston Celtics, made his first selection in the first round of the draft when he chose Baylor Scheierman from Creighton with the 30th overall choice.
Being one of the more experienced players in the draft, Scheierman ought to go straight onto Boston’s depth chart, providing another scoring option off the bench on the wing behind Sam Hauser.
With the exception of a few team options that are due this weekend, Boston already has 12 players under contract for the upcoming year. On Thursday, on day two of the NBA Draft, Boston will also have the 54th overall pick at their disposal.
The 23-yeаr-оld Scheiermаn hаs а weаlth оf cоllegiаte experience priоr tо entering the NBа. Tаking аdvаntаge оf the extrа yeаr оf eligibility grаnted tо plаyers due tо the pаndemic, he plаyed in cоllege fоr five seаsоns in аll. Scheiermаn is а nоtаble аdditiоn tо the Celtics squаd becаuse, during his cаreer, he shоt 39.0% frоm three-pоint rаnge.
Scheierman was a player for South Dakota State during his first three seasons. After that, he attended Creighton for his remaining two years of college, where he helped the Bluejays make it to the Elite Eight in 2023.
Scheierman progressed during his time in college. In his freshman year, he scored 6.0 points on average but continued to develop. After moving to Creighton, Scheierman’s stats slightly declined, but he concluded the season well because he was an essential member of their Big East team. Though the C’s will try to turn him into a rotation player, the guard will now try to stay with the defending NBA champions.
