ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports Thompson is supposed to talk with the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, and Philadelphia 76ers.

When free agency started, Lakers star LeBron James apparently contacted Thompson.

“I’m told LeBron James called Klay Thompson straight when free agency opened,” Wojnarowski said.

“These talks; this negotiation will last tomorrow. Tonight’s resolution most likely won’t come about.Although James is officially a free agent, he claimed he would be ready to accept less money should the Lakers land another quality player.

Last season Thompson averaged 17.9 points (43% shooting), 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists after spending all 13 seasons with the Warriors.’

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, James apparently had Thompson on dial trying to persuade him to join the Lakers amid the team’s quest of banner 18 as soon as the free agency clock started to run.

Wojnarowski reported on SportsCenter, via ClutchPoints Twitter (X), “I’m told LeBron James called Klay Thompson right right when free agency opened [at] 6 PM Eastern.”Klay Thompson still isn’t on the edge of making a decision, though; per Wojnarowski, he expects the recruitment process to extend until tomorrow at least.

“These talks, this negotiation will last tomorrow. Wojnarowski said, most likely not a resolution tonight.

Though Klay Thompson’s 2023–24 season was challenging, his championship experience and outstanding floor-spacing skills make him still a coveted commodity on the free-agent market. Thompson should still be a high-level role player who demands a lot of respect on the perimeter given his body of work as a marksman; he may not be able to be the second option on offense anymore as the Golden State Warriors needed him to be this past season.

Since Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was moved back in 2021, their roster hasn’t exactly shown a high-level player of that archetype so the Lakers are also looking to add more 3 and D wings. LeBron James has had such success over his career; he is flanked by shooters of a like caliber to Thompson, so it’s not too difficult to understand why James is trying whatever it takes to persuade the 34-year old shooting guard to join the Lakers.
