After being a free agency and without a contract with the Clippers for a while, 34-year-old forward Paul George has signed a four-year deal with the Sixers.
He will reportedly receive 212 million dollars, the highest contract amount set by the league, according to ESPN.George is back in the Eastern Conference, and he’ll be joining Joel Embiid and Tyreke Maxey to form a formidable Big Three that will challenge the Boston Celtics for the NBA title.
In order to accomplish this, they have not hesitated to acquire a highly sought-after player, offering him a maximum salary of $49.2, $51.7, $54.1, and $56.5 million over the next four seasons.
After a high-level summit in Los Angeles, where George and his agent Aaron Mintz of CAA met with an entourage from the Sixers, who reportedly went to great lengths to persuade the player, the deal was reportedly consummated, according to the same source.
Julius Erving, general manager Elton Brand, franchise owner Josh Harris, and president of operations Daryl Morey were all in attendance.
What a great audience!
Attending the meeting was Sixers front office executive Peter Dinwiddie, who happened to be George’s personal acquaintance from their time together with the Pacers.
With Embiid as a dominant power forward in the paint, Maxey as an explosive point guard, and George as an outstanding small forward, the trio of Embiid, George, and Maxey—all of whom were All-Stars last season—will be one of the most formidable Big Threes in recent NBA history.
George has been a member of the All-Star team nine times. During his five years with the Clippers, he averaged 263 regular season games with 23 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals. The Clippers are saddened by his exit.”Paul is a tremendous talent,” the Clippers said in a statement they released on Sunday, adding that George had informed them he intended to join with another team. The five years we were his were a blessing, and we are grateful. During that time, he contributed to the team’s unprecedented success, was named to three All-Star games, and set a franchise record most three-pointers made.Although the Lakers are sad to see him go, they have lost no time in beginning to restock their roster. Indeed, they have previously inked deals with point guard Kelly Oubre Jr., center Andre Drummond, and veteran Eric Gordon, all for a combined 16.3 million over two years.
Along with George, seven other players—LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis—have been named to at least nine All-Star teams since they joined the league. He has also earned six All-NBA honors, including 2019’s first team honor.
