Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson’s longtime teammate, paid respect to him on social media after he agreed to leave the Warriors and join the Mavericks.
As a way to express his feelings about “gonna miss” his backcourt partner, Curry shared a number of images of the two of them on Instagram story, concluding with the words “Splash Bros 4 life my guy.”From 2015–2022, the Warriors won four NBA titles, solidifying their position as the most successful dynasty of the contemporary period. Star forward Draymond Green, along with Curry and Thompson, were key members of this historic run. Both players lived up to the big claim that former Golden State head coach Mark Jackson made about them being “the greatest shooting backcourt in the history of the game” in 2013.
Throughout the 2023–24 season, there were signs that Thompson’s tenure with the Warriors was about to come to a close. As part of their commitment to playing their younger players more frequently, the Warriors benched the 34-year-old. This was his first season averaging fewer than 20 points since his third year in the NBA, when he averaged 17.9 per game.
Curry expressed his hope that their connection would persist despite Thompson’s problems throughout the year.
Just after the Warriors’ play-in tournament defeat to the Sacramento Kings, Curry stated, “I could never see myself not with those two guys,” referring to Thompson and Green. We won’t be playing for the rest of time; I get that the league is always evolving and that a lot of factors are involved. But we’ve been through so much together that, ultimately, I can tell that they and I both want to win. To be honest, that’s my only concern.
Curry must now proceed with a revamped Warriors squad. To make up for Thompson’s output and get back into postseason contention next season, Golden State is looking to bolster their roster with complementary players.
