The Argentine national team will not have Lionel Messi competing at the Olympics in Paris later this month.

On Tuesday, Coach Javier Mascherano revealed the roster for the upcoming World Cup, which featured Nicolás Otamendi, a defender, and forward Julián Álvarez.

Messi, who has been on the sidelines all year due to injuries, comes back on the field at the Copa America to try to defend the continental title he won in 2021. He is 37 years old. That win set Argentina up for their 2022 World Cup triumph.In 2008, during his lone Olympic campaign, Messi won the gold medal in Beijing.

After the Copa America is over, Mascherano will bolster his squad with goalie Gerónimo Rulli, Otamendi, and Álvarez. He won the Olympic gold medal in 2004 and 2008.Also joining is Claudio Echeverri, a midfielder who Manchester City just acquired from River Plate.
