Three Ways Klay Thompson Is Set to Convince Skeptics About the Mavericks

Klay Thompson’s decision to reject the Golden State Warriors and join the Dallas Mavericks at the beginning of free agency was one of the more surprising NBA moves of the past few months. Their friendship had degenerated to that degree. Despite leading the Warriors to four titles and establishing a dynasty alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Thompson left the Bay Area for Dallas because he felt unappreciated.

Surprised Klay Thompson chose the Mavericks over the Lakers? | First Things First

They probably thought his play was getting worse and disagreed about how much he was worth as a free agent, which is why Thompson seemed to distance himself from Golden State. He was obviously offended by their contract offers; in fact, he accepted an equally bad deal in order to play with Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić.

To what extent has the sharpshooter’s decline caused the media and internet to focus on him to an unhealthy degree, or is he truly a total bust?

It seems more like the second one to me.

When it comes to high-volume shooting, Thompson is still among the best.He maintains a crucial ability as a floor spacer off the ball.

The ability to disincentivize opponents from sending help to a team’s on-ball scorers by spreading them out throughout the floor is a key component of a championship-caliber squad. Look at the Boston Celtics; they tried to push teams to cover Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown one-on-one by prioritizing having zero bad shooters on the floor at any given time. It backfired.

Dоnčić and Irving, twо оf the mоst gifted shоt creatоrs in histоry, will nоw be Thоmpsоn’s partners. His dоwnhill shооting style cоmplements theirs perfectly, and he shоuld be a huge imprоvement оver spоt-up shооters like Derrick Jоnes Jr. and PJ Washingtоn.

Although he is no longer a player worthy of All-Star consideration due to these diminished abilities, he could still prove to be an asset to a winning squad if given the right support.

When paired with Luka and Kyrie, Klay is a natural. To compensate for his shortcomings, Dallas possesses all the necessary players.Once again, Klay’s declining athleticism is the direct cause of his current career flaws, which manifest in areas like defense and his ability to establish separation. Fortunately, Dallas possesses all the necessary components to address such concerns, in contrast to the unexpectedly weak squad from Golden State.

If Dallas needs wing defenders, they have PJ Washingtоn, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes; rim prоtectоrs, they have Daniel Gaffоrd and Dereck Lively; and if Dallas needs shоt creatоrs, they have Dоnčić and Irving. Their star pair оf Gaffоrd and Lively will relieve Thоmpsоn оf any оff-the-dribble respоnsibilities, Grimes and Washingtоn will handle the challenging defensive assignments, and Thоmpsоn can still be a respectable perimeter defender despite his slоwer feet.

Now that we have that out of the way, Thompson can concentrate on being the best player in NBA history at his specialty: making spot-up threes off of movement actions and catches. The lack of sufficient play finishers for Irving and Dončić contributed to Dallas’ crushing loss in the NBA Finals, as it enabled the Boston Celtics to crowd the two guards in a manner that would have been impossible with Klay Thompson playing.

Despite Dončić and Irving setting up fantastic opportunities for their supporting players, the Mavericks shot a historically bad percentage from beyond the arc, especially on threes that were placed above the break. With Thompson on board, Dallas will be able to rethink their approach and rotation in a big way, which will help them remedy that problem.
