Portugal lost to France, despite advancing from the previous round courtesy of goalkeeper Diogo Costa’s three consecutive miraculous saves.

The shootout ended in a 5-3 French victory after Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix missed the third penalty. France’s Bradley Barcola and Theo Hernandez scored the subsequent goals.

Pepe, a Portuguese defender, broke down in tears after the game as Cristiano Ronaldo, the team captain, consoled him.

After 143 appearances for his country, 41-year-old veteran Pepe will likely retire from international action after Euro 2024.

After 17 years on the field, the defender has helped Portugal win two trophies, one of which being the 2016 European Championship, when his team defeated France 1-0.

Pepe became the oldest player to appear in a European Championship competition, and he started all but one of Portugal’s matches in 2024.

The news was confirmed by captain Ronaldo after Monday’s victory against Slovenia, and Euro 2024 will be his last international competition. On the other hand, Ronaldo showed his emotions during the match by crying after missing a penalty in the first overtime that would have surely advanced Portugal to the quarterfinals.

Fortunately for Ronaldo, Portugal advanced to the following round by prevailing in the subsequent penalty shootout.

Even though Ronaldo converted the first penalty in the shootout against France—just like he did in the match against Slovakia—the team still lost and did not advance to the semifinals.

The semi-final match, instead, will pit France against Spain at the Allianz Arena in Munich at 8 p.m. BST.
