As Kevin Durant and LeBron James spearhead Team USA’s Olympic squad for what could be their final journey

Head coach Steve Kerr of Team USA had his first coaching experience twelve years ago while working as a TNT announcer.

Stephen Curry had just finished his third season in the NBA, the year before he broke out, twelve years ago. Rookie of the Year voting had just concluded, and Kawhi Leonard had placed fourth. In the most recent NBA Draft, Anthony Davis was chosen first overall.

In the year 2000, Tyrese Haliburton was a young boy of twelve. Fourth grade was Anthony Edwards’s year. Joel Embiid would eventually pledge his allegiance to the University of Kansas after relocating to the US only two years ago.

Kevin Durant and LeBron James first played together in London twelve years ago, when they were perhaps the world’s top two players. The best on-court rivalry the NBA has seen since Bird and Magic’s era began with their first of three NBA Finals encounters, in which they competed against each other.After a 12-year hiatus, Durant and James will reunite as teammates in 2024, perhaps for a last time, as part of Team USA, an event honoring their contributions to the sport of basketball.

“It’s wonderful,” James exclaimed on Saturday. I think it’s a testament to our dedication to our art and our relatively good health that we are still in this stage of our career where we can still go out and represent Team USA at a high level, twelve years later. Our game has evolved over the past twelve years, and it’s an honor to play with Kevin Durant, one of the all-time greats. That sounds like it will be a lot of fun, and I can’t wait.

I thought this was the last ride. The thought that it may be looms large over training camp even after only one day.

Before taking a little pause to collect his thoughts, Durant admitted that he is aware that this may be one of his final encounters with James on the basketball floor in general, not only as a teammate.

“He’s simply had a tremendous impact on basketball, particularly throughout my career, ever since I was a high school follower of his,” Durant remarked. He continues to play at a high level despite being nearly 40 years old, which is something I find encouraging as well. I can’t help but feel energized whenever I’m in ‘Bron’s’ company, whether it’s for a short meal or just passing by. This league has given him a wealth of experience, so it will be a pleasure to spend time with him. I am eagerly anticipating it since I am certain that the discussions that will ensue will be fantastic.

There has never been a better time for international basketball than right now, so James’ comeback after sitting out the last two Olympics will be a fitting farewell, if that is actually the case. Durant and James, more than anybody else in the past two decades, should be representing the basketball world’s top power in the most prestigious international event right now.

Much has been said about how other countries have “caught up,” and with good reason. But it detracts from the actions of a fully functional Team USA juggernaut and is employed too casually. That is why this roster is useful.

It is sufficient to have that couple and Curry included. Seven out of the eight MVPs from 2009–2016 were in this group. It seems silly to even call the supporting cast ludicrous, but they are. Last year, Embiid received his own MVP award. Additionally, players including as Leonard, Devin Booker, Jayson Tatum, and Davis have been named to the NBA First Team this decade.

That’s 66 players covered before we even talk about Jrue Holiday, Edwards, Bam Adebayo, and Tyrese Haliburton. Half of the field could use any one of those four players at their best.

When it comes to NBA history, James is up there with the best of them. For many, Durant ranks as the league’s all-time leading scorer, and he’s not far behind in the standings either. James’ 2004 bronze medal prompted the formation of the fabled redemption squad, which ultimately resulted in his two gold medals, while Durant has gone three for three in gold medals. The forthcoming Olympics will put an end to any lingering doubts about Durant’s status as the greatest male contender for Team USA, and he should already have that designation.

Just try to put yourself in Haliburton’s shoes—a younger crew member.

Kerr is quite fortunate to have those two on board, given their extensive Olympic background. James and Durant do not need the schooling that is concentrated on rule modifications and such in the first few of days, he pointed out.

Curry is also important and should be noted. At 36 years of age, he will be able to cross the last item off his career bucket list—winning an Olympic gold medal—right up there with James and Durant.

Curry, Durant, and James have been the league’s public faces for quite some time, and as their careers wind down, a new era is beginning, as much discussion has focused on this topic over the past year.

During Saturday’s practice, Durant gained a sense of that.

The Olympic Games will serve as a lyrical transition, in a sense. The mountaintop man has moved on from discussing Durant and James. The topics of conversation center on foreign stars such as Nikola Jokic of Serbia, Luka Doncic of Slovenia (who was not qualified), and Giannis Antetokounmpo of Greece.

The playing field is evolving. However, by teaming up, Durant and James can serve as a sobering reminder of the previous head coach and the monumental task that lies ahead.
