When thinking about legendary American sports vehicles, few can help but think of the 1966 Ford Mustang. An exceptionally well-preserved example of this vintage muscle vehicle has piqued the interest of local automobile aficionados in Cypress, Texas, a Houston suburb.

John Wilkins has lived in Cypress his whole life, and the Mustang in issue is his property. Wilkins bought the vehicle in 1972, when he was barely 19 years old. He spotted the Mustang, still painted in its factory Nightmist Blue, while shopping for a used sports car on a budget.

“I remember seeing it sitting on the lot and just knowing I had to have it,” remembered Wilkins. These cars, if they were in decent condition, could still be had for a fair price back then. That that day, I drove it home after successfully haggling with the vendor to a price of $1,800.

Wilkins has restored and properly maintained his 1966 Mustang for the past fifty years. All of the original components, including the 289 cubic inch V8 engine, Cruise-O-Matic gearbox, and unique body style, are in pristine condition. Regularly, Wilkins takes the car for spins around Cypress, a sight that never fails to turn heads.

“This Mustang has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” he added. I’m proud to have the opportunity to keep this vehicle in perpetuity because it represents more than simply a vehicle to me. Operating a vehicle of this magnitude and quality is an experience like no other.
