An exceptionally well-preserved 1977 Mercury Cougar has piqued the interest of vintage automobile fans in North Carolina’s lively Greensboro. Emily Jacobson, a resident of the area, is quite proud of her strong and stylish car.\
As a teenager in the late 1970s, Jacobson—a local Greensboro resident—fell in love with the Cougar after seeing one cruising down Elm Street. When Jacobson thought back on the Cougar, he remembered how enthralling its styling was. “The long hood, the sweeping roofline, the chrome trim – it had such a distinctive and elegant look compared to other cars on the road at the time.”
Jacobson was able to get her very own 1977 Cougar in 1993, after waiting for a long time. The car’s former owner had taken great care of it, and now the shiny Vermillion Red exterior belies its pristine condition. Over the years, Jacobson has dedicated herself fully to restoring the Cougar to its former splendor.
“This car has been an absolute labor of love,” Jacobson remarked. Every detail is period correct, and I’ve spent numerous hours researching parts and tracking down replacements. I want to do my part to preserve the Cougar’s reputation by keeping it in pristine condition, as it would have been in the late 1970s.
The hard work of Jacobson has clearly been rewarded. In Greensboro, her 1977 Cougar is a conversation starter at car events and on weekend drives through the city’s historic streets. In addition to providing an exciting ride, the Cougar’s sumptuous interior and high-end amenities ensure a relaxing one thanks to its strong 302 cubic-inch V8 engine and smooth-shifting automatic transmission.
“Getting behind the wheel of this vehicle is like stepping into another era,” Jacobson continued. “Whenever I get in my car, I’m whisked back to my teenage years, when I vividly remember passing other Cougars on the Greensboro roads. What a unique sensation!
Winner of “Best in Show” at last year’s Greensboro Vintage Auto Festival, Jacobson’s 1977 Cougar is now widely recognized as a top example of this legendary American luxury coupe, a result of her unwavering commitment to the car. This elegant and powerful Cougar is a treasured relic of Greensboro’s automotive past for local aficionados.
