When national meteorologists published Mole’s spectacular images online, they quickly went viral. Some viewers first wondered if the photographs were real or if they had been digitally edited. On the other hand, AccuWeather.com meteorologist Jesse Ferrell said he was “95 percent sure of the photo’s authenticity” after analyzing the original Mole photo data and coming to the conclusion that the images were almost probably legitimate.

“At the time this occurred, I was residing at my parents’ residence in Oldsmar, Florida, which borders Safety Harbor, the northernmost point of Tampa Bay,” Mole informed Earthy Mission. There was no wind and it was raining lightly as we watched a movie. Towards the bay’s southern shore, I noticed a slim waterspout as I peered out the window. A thicker funnel formed as time went on.

Whirling columns of water and spray, called waterspouts, can be seen when a whirlwind passes over a big body of water, like the ocean. It is very unusual for a waterspout of this intensity to make landfall, however they do develop over water. One, however, did. While thankfully no one was hurt, the strong vortex inflicted a lot of damage to the area’s property before it ultimately died down.

If you asked Mole, “When the funnel approached, we hid inside the closet,” she would tell you. The irony is that I begged my dad to let me play outside, but he was having none of it, hehe. Seeing and experiencing a waterspout for the first time was an exciting and fascinating adventure. The neighboring house had shingles torn off the roof and their 20-foot johnboat pulled out of the water, which eventually landed on their backyard lawn.
