Guard Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns began for Team USA on Wednesday in its 86-72 exhibition victory over Canada in Las Vegas, further demonstrating why he will be an invaluable asset at the Olympics in Paris.

In 20 minutes, Booker scored nine points, grabbed two rebounds, and dished out two assists. On both ends of the court, he had a constant impact on the game and did a good job of covering for all of his elite teammates. This is what set him apart from the majority in Tokyo when he won his first gold medal at the Olympics, and players who take on a smaller role like him help him in his quest for a second.

When Booker traveled straight from the NBA Finals to Japan when the tournament was already in progress, he was unable to take part in games like the one on Wednesday. LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Stephen Curry, and a fifth player will start beside Durant. Many people believe that Anthony Edwards, a fierce defender and competent shooter who isn’t just a teenage superstar with exceptional abilities, will be that player. However, if we’re analyzing the roster’s balance and figuring out how to best use Edwards’ abilities, it makes the most sense to use him as this team’s Carmelo Anthony or Dwyane Wade—a highly skilled scorer and elite athleticism who can provide spark off the bench.

After the starters had a slow start, Edwards was excellent in that position on Wednesday, scoring 13 points and offering a spark in his opening play.

(Aside: It’s strange that Mikal Bridges, rather than White, wasn’t called to offer the Americans additional assistance. Bridges also had a great summer playing for Team USA.)

While some may not have considered Holiday and Adebayo for important roles, those who stayed up late throughout the summer of 2021 saw them alongside Booker as the only dependable extras to support Durant’s heroics.

His defense in the USA uniform was spot on as always.

Haliburton contributed two points, four rebounds, six assists, four steals, and a block in a pleasant evening as well. Holiday finished with 11 points, 2 blocks, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds.

I’d venture to predict that we’ll see a lot more Booker, Edwards, and Holiday outside of the Big 4. This squad is designed to play big, and maybe it will, but more three-guard looks are likely given the versatility that James and Durant offer as big wings and the lack of depth at that position. On Wednesday, Holiday was the fifth player to start.

Calf discomfort, which Durant claimed started around a week and a half before the team left for Las Vegas, prevented him from playing. He missed the entire week of practice. According to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, Team USA is certain that Durant will be fit by July 28, when Olympic competition gets underway.

Before their last pair of shows in London on July 20 and 22, the Americans had two exhibitions in Abu Dhabi on July 15 and 17. It would be good to see Durant back on the court for one of those, as Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic, begins pool play in Paris. Vasilije Micic, Nikola Jovic, and Bogdan Bogdanovic join Jokic as the team’s leaders. They are not weaklings.

The competition on Wednesday demonstrated some adjustment that will occur for a new group, as was to be expected.

Eight errors and six missed shots greeted Team USA in the first minutes. Joel Embiid, a big man, has a new rhythm to get used to and will be counted on as one of the main attacking alternatives. He still commands double teams even at this level, and the only way to stop this team is to leave an All-Star unguarded. He had several chances to find the perfect pass, but he also lacked toughness, which led to four early fouls in 12 minutes. Furthermore, he won’t get away with his FIBA foul baiting.

Tatum and Edwards were excellent scorers off the bench, but they occasionally saw their one-on-one play go nowhere. Tatum in particular had trouble adjusting to his new role in 2021, but he ought to be much, much better this time. Like in any stage of the game, Team USA will perform at its peak if the ball is flying about. All 12 of these guys have unbelievable passing skills. Canada had little chance once the Americans managed to activate that by leaving during the transition.

With 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and four blocks, Davis had an excellent night. One of his personal goals was to immediately grasp the FIBA rebounding regulations by tipping in a teammate’s shot that was still above the cylinder after tapping an opponent’s shot off the hoop. Watch how he and Embiid adjust—it was just one game, not even a real one. Later in the tournament, Davis may end up playing more minutes if the disparity looks as wide as it was on Wednesday.
