Though they were unsuccessful in acquiring most of the major players this summer, the Los Angeles Lakers may still have a shot at a few important targets, according to recent rumors out of the city. Wendell Carter Jr. and Lauri Markkanen are among the players mentioned, according to a franchise executive who spoke with Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports.

The Lakers aimed to build a Western dynasty by signing Paul George or Klay Thompson, who would have played with LeBron, and taking advantage of the city’s charm. They will instead need to seek elsewhere if they wish to make a substantial roster shakeup.
Even though those elite players aren’t on the table, the Lakers can still improve their roster with a 7’0″ center. On 48% shooting, 7-year NBA veteran Lauri averaged 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in his first All-Star season. With his height, speed, and respectable three-point shooting (39.9% last season), he is a dependable two-way player.
The Jazz’s readiness for a complete rebuild might alter the course of trade talks involving Markkanen, who was previously considered untouchable. We already know the Lakers would rather trade D’Angelo Russell than pursue a title contender, so why not make a bold move for a player who could open that door?
With Lаuri prоviding the necessаry spаce fоr the Lаkers’ tаlents tо аssаult the rim, аnthоny Dаvis аnd the rest оf the frоntcоurt wоuld fоrm а strоng defensive unit. The Lakers remain in the dark as tо whether Markkanen is currently available оr whether the Jazz are seriоusly cоntemplating selling their franchise icоn. Because оf this, Rоb Pelinka’s backup plan nоw features Wendell Carter Jr.
The Lakers could bolster their frontcourt defense with Carter Jr., who isn’t exactly an All-Star, but he might be available for a lower price. Even at age 25, Carter Jr. can take his game to the next level; he averaged 11.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game for the Magic last season while shooting 52.5% from the field.
It is uncertain if the Lakers will be able to execute a meaningful trade with their limited assets before the deadline. In such case, they will need head coach JJ Redick, along with new teammates Bronny James and Dalton Knecht, to shoulder the burden and meet the unattainable standards.
