Besides the opportunity to lift the first-ever Mitch Richmond Trophy, the Warriors won’t take much pride in Wednesday’s victory over the Sacramento Kings in the California Classic championship.
Still, coach Anthony Vereen of the Golden State Warriors came out in the closing minutes of the 91-90 win at Chase Center with summer league veterans Trayce Jackson-Davis and Brandin Podziemski on the court because the game was that vital.
First of all, with two minutes left in the game, Vereen needed both of them to help them recover from a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit that the Kings had cut to 88-84.
Conversely, it provided Podziemski and Jackson-Davis with an opportunity to hone their game-ending abilities, which Vereen thinks will be crucial to their and the Warriors’ future success.
“For our team going forward, it’s just invaluable for those two guys to get those end-of-game reps to see how it feels, to try to impact winning, to make winning plays,” said Vereen, who also praised the players for their better conditioning. Coming back to a squad and fitting in isn’t easy, but I think they handled it admirably.
“In the final analysis, we emerged victorious while they were able to log some valuable minutes.”

Podziemski, who had a monster game against the Kings with 15 points and 4 assists, expressed his appreciation for playing in such games. Everyone is bringing their A-game because everyone is vying for contracts. From a competitive perspective, that is all that is required. Taking on those individuals was a great experience.
What you desire is to be present when the game is most important. It makes no difference to you whether you start or come off the bench. I want to be a leader, to be trusted with the ball at the end of the game, and to be out there when it matters.
Podziemski continued a pattern that started in his rookie year and performed all of it plus more against the Kings.
“Those are some of the things we mentioned to him that will determine his fate,” Vereen stated. What are some ways to get other people excited about playing with you? We have faith in your character and your commitment to doing the right thing on the field, but how can you captivate an audience and invite them to join you on this journey?
The 11-point, 6-rebound player, Jackson-Davis, is aiming to step up his leadership game, especially defensively.
