After being left out of Nike’s latest Olympic campaign, Phoenix Suns great Kevin Durant took to Instagram story to deliver a slew of puzzling remarks.
Please subscribe after reading this content; I appreciate it!”@nike tell me, Am I a bad person?????” was the first post that Durant made.
The latest advertising campaign by Nike for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris is called “Winning Isn’t for Everyone.” Featuring a slew of athletes—including NBA greats Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Victor Wembanyama—and narrated by William Defoe, the company unveiled a new commercial today. The sacrifices sportsmen make to reach the top are on full display.
No matter how hard you try, you will not be able to win every single one. Put the odds in your favor and play with conviction. Congratulations if you’re not interested in winning. This is just the beginning,” Nike captioned the Instagram post.
Included in the roster of athletes showcased in the ad are Sha’Carri Richardson, Sophia Smith, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Cristiano Ronaldo, A’ja Wilson, Ixhelt Gonzales, Vini Jr., Sabrina Ionescu, and Eliud Kipchoge. The Seattle Supersonics drafted Durant with the second overall pick in 2007, and Nike was the first team to sign him. With the release of the KD17, his 17th signature shoe for Nike, Durant joined Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, and himself as four athletes with lifetime deals with the brand.
With the Olympics just around the corner, Durant has surpassed all previous Olympians in terms of statistical significance for the U.S. men’s basketball team. Throughout his international career, he has scored 640 points, which is the highest ever for Team USA in both the Olympics and FIBA, and he leads the men’s basketball team in scoring at the Olympics with 435 points. With Durant as their top scorer each year, the last three Olympic teams he has been a part of have all won the gold medal.
The commercial begins with the question, “Am I a bad person?” in reference to Durant’s initial post.
Additional posts by Durant featured images of him and Team USA celebrating Olympic gold medals.
A photo of James, Bryant, and Carmelo Anthony appeared in the first, along with the caption: “Been wit yall every step of the way @nike.”
The following two images featured Durant and Team USA celebrating Olympic gold medals in 2016 and 2020, respectively. One of the images was tagged with the phrase “Even during the quarantine Olympics @nike,” alluding to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A tweet from Rich Kleiman, Durant’s agent, seems to validate the displeasure with Durant’s exclusion from the campaign:
“I still recall the days when very few people were interested in competing in the COVID-19 Olympics; however, Durant, having suffered an achilles tear the year before, returned to Tokyo with the best scoring average of all time and won his third gold medal!” The truth of a tale depends on the narrator!
