Celtics Assistant Speaks About the Coaching Staff Departures and What They Will Miss

When Joe Mazzulla had his first opportunity to assemble his NBA coaching staff last offseason, he assembled one of the league’s top minds. The most notable of these was the employment of Charles Lee and Sam Cassell.

Now that he’s with the Hornets, the former is beginning his first and much-deserved chance to become an NBA head coach; he previously helped the Celtics win Banner 18.

Although JJ Redick was the predicted winner of the Lakers’ open position, Cassell will remain in Boston in a more prominent capacity. Celtics forwards Tony Dobbins, defenseman D.J. MacLeay, and point guard Matt Reynolds were all promoted, according to Boston Globe reporter Adam Himmelsbach.

Blaine Mueller and Jermaine Bucknor were with Lee in Charlotte, but the majority of the coaching staff and roster from the previous championship remain the same.

Before being promoted to assistant at Queen City, the latter served as development coach for Boston. This season, Mueller oversaw the bench for the G League Finalist Maine Celtics.

Both of them are great assets to Lee’s team because of their work ethic, game teaching skills, and ability to connect with players to bring out their best.

As for the players’ leaving, Celtics Summer League coach MacLeay said, “In terms of what we’ll miss from those guys, Charles in particular, his positivity, his energy, his day-to-day.”

“With Blaine, I think (we’ll miss) his mind—his mind for the game,” he concluded. A unique intellect, he is. He was instrumental in suggesting several of our Finals strategies. Therefore, he is excellent in that regard.

Additionally, Buck’s innate curiosity and will to learn are important. If anyone on our team improved from beginning to end last year, it was him. The fact that he will be joining the Hornets as an assistant coach is something I find quite cool. We will greatly miss his presence.
